<abstract_fa>
</abstract_fa>
	<abstract>
Background and Aim: Knowledge hiding refers to the intentional withholding or concealment of requested knowledge from others. In clinical settings, this behavior may negatively affect teamwork, quality of care, patient safety, and organizational learning. Despite the importance of knowledge management in nursing, limited evidence is available regarding knowledge hiding among Iranian nurses. Nurses working in intensive care units and emergency departments are continuously exposed to medical device alarms, and alarm fatigue may influence their professional performance and workplace interactions. This study aimed to determine the level of knowledge hiding among intensive care unit and emergency nurses and to examine its relationship with demographic characteristics, occupational factors, and alarm fatigue.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in 2024 among 260 nurses working in intensive care units and emergency departments of public hospitals affiliated with Kashan University of Medical Sciences. Participants were selected using multistage stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a demographic and occupational characteristics questionnaire, the Knowledge Hiding Questionnaire developed by Connelly et al., and the Alarm Fatigue Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Spearman correlation coefficient in SPSS. A significance level of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: The mean age of the nurses was 33.28±7.27 years, and most of them were female (69.2%), married (56.2%), held a bachelor’s degree (87.0%), and worked rotating shifts (83.1%). The mean total score of knowledge hiding was 24.63±8.81 (possible range: 12-60); 67.3%, 28.1%, and 4.6% of the nurses reported low, moderate, and high levels of knowledge hiding, respectively. The mean scores of rationalized hiding, evasive hiding, and playing dumb were 8.45±3.26, 7.69±3.36, and 8.48±3.56, respectively, and the total knowledge hiding score and its dimensions did not differ significantly among nurses working in the intensive care, coronary care, and emergency units. No statistically significant correlation was found between knowledge hiding and alarm fatigue (r=0.087, P=0.16). Moreover, none of the demographic or occupational characteristics, including age, gender, marital status, work experience, ward, shift type, educational level, and income, had a statistically significant relationship with knowledge hiding, whereas income (r=0.128, P=0.041) and shift type (P=0.04) were significantly associated with alarm fatigue.
Conclusion: The findings showed a low level of knowledge hiding among intensive care unit and emergency nurses. Knowledge hiding was not significantly associated with alarm fatigue or demographic and occupational characteristics. Further studies are recommended to examine the organizational, managerial, and psychological factors that may contribute to knowledge hiding behaviors in clinical settings.
</abstract>
